Bonding is highly convenient and an easy choice for patients who want a subtle change to their teeth. It can be done in just one appointment and requires less preparation of their teeth, making it much more comfortable and less invasive than other procedures.
Unless we’re using the bonding material to fill in a cavity, we can apply it without the aid of anesthesia. For mild tooth decay, we will need to numb the area up to remove the decay before applying the bonding material. Dental bonding is made out of composite resin material that can be color-matched to your existing teeth, so we’ll carefully check the color of your surrounding teeth before applying the bonding to your tooth. This will help ensure a natural appearance.
Once we get the area thoroughly prepared, we’ll apply the bonding to the affected area and work it to attain the desired shape. Once we smooth it down and are satisfied with how it looks, we’ll use special ultraviolet light to cure the composite resin. In a short amount of time, you’ll have a completely restored smile without any pain or downtime!
Dental bonding is a fantastic cosmetic option for patients who have moderate issues that need addressing, but it’s important to be realistic about your expectations of this procedure. The composite resin material in bonding is susceptible to staining, and you still need to take care to brush and floss it. Bonding material can be brittle and might crack or shatter if you’re not careful. Abstain from crunching hard things like candies or ice with your teeth after bonding and understand that bonding isn’t expected to last forever - but you can certainly expect to get a good ten years out of it with a good oral hygiene regimen!
